Right Start... Parent for Life!
YHI in-home family
counseling and education helps sustain families and eliminates
the need for children to be placed in foster care.
YHI Intensive and Traditional Family Preservation Services
work with families who are at risk of having their children
placed in foster care to prevent removal, and YHI Family Restoration
Services works with families whose children have been placed
in foster care with the goal of helping the family to reunite
sooner and to sustain the reunification permanently. Families
going through an adoption process are also served by these
services.
Out
of the Shadows....
Lisa and her six children were facing a very difficult time
and became involved with Child Protective Services in 2002.
The issues in the family were such that her children were
at immediate risk of being placed in foster care. Lisa was
given the opportunity to participate in YHI In-Home Family
Services, but at that time, she was not ready to make any
changes. Sadly, her children were subsequently placed in
the custody of the Department of Social Services.
Into
a promising future…
We were so happy to reconnect with Lisa again in 2005 when her family was referred
to a new component of YHI In-Home Family Services. This time Lisa was at a very
different place in her life and was ready to do whatever she needed to get her
children home. Lisa and her YHI social worker worked diligently for over six
months, and while they came across many challenges, Lisa and her children are
now back together. Today the family is functioning as a healthy, happy, cohesive
unit, and Lisa is using her experience to help other mothers in the program.
When asked what motivates her to volunteer her time to work with other moms,
Lisa says, “I want to see families use the services that are out there
for them and not make the same mistakes I did. If I had taken the help sooner,
maybe my children wouldn’t have gone to foster care. But thank God y’all
were there to help even then.”
Community Partners Made
a Difference:
The Duke Endowment and Sisters of Mercy of North Carolina
Foundation continue to provide grant funding that strengthens
capacity to serve more families in need of service.
Urban Restoration continues to provide ongoing aftercare
services for families, including life skills training,
day respite care, emergency financial assistance and
community advocacy.
Annual Thanksgiving and Christmas “Families Helping
Families” events were held in collaboration with
New Covenant AME Church, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and
DOVE Inc.
YHI Christmas Toyshop sponsors made it possible for
parents in the program to choose Christmas gifts for
their children.
